Once an actual island, Merritt is now connected by causeway to Cape Canaveral. While there are no campgrounds in Merritt Island itself, surrounding areas offer a variety of RV parks close to beaches, state parks and tourist attractions. Each camp site has a fire ring, grill and picnic table. Sebastian Inlet is known for its saltwater fishing, and visitors often catch red fish, bluefish and Spanish mackerel.

The park includes three miles of Atlantic beach ideal for swimming, scuba diving and snorkeling. Visitors can also canoe and kayak in the Indian River Lagoon. I saw several tire tracks on trails. We also saw what appeared to be bear tracks. Elfie will provide a copy of a hand drawn map to each person. Elfie also went over the map with us, giving us good ideas of where to ride and the current conditions of the trails. Since the map is hand drawn, it is a little hard to read and confusing. The map could stand to be updated but it is still useful.

Weekly and monthly discounts are available in the off season. Are campfires allowed at campsites? It used to be that you couldn’t have a campfire at the sites, because they worried about people letting them get out of control etc. But this policy changed. You can bring in your own contained campfire unit. Typically, stores call them fire pits or outdoor fireplaces. It’s a solid metal bottom on short legs with metal mesh sides and a top. If you have a creekside spot, you must have a solid metal top for your fire pit.
